The Altar Servers assist the clergy on all occasion including Weekdays and Sunday Masses. Our importance is that every Altar server learns to be good child and follows the path of our Patron, Saint John Berchmans. We have 10 Altar Servers at present.
The Altar Servers meeting is held on every Sunday before the mass at 8-30am except on first Sunday of the month. The meeting commences with a prayer conducted by the Altar Servers. During the meeting the responsibilities are shared and given to all so that everyone gets a chance to take part in the liturgy.
The main aim of altar servers is to assist the priest and deacons during liturgical services, such as Mass, funerals, and other sacraments. Their responsibilities typically include:
1. Preparing the altar and sacred vessels before Mass.
2. Carrying the processional cross, candles, and incense.
3. Assisting the priest with the preparation of the gifts (bread and wine).
4. Holding the missal (prayer book) for the priest.
5. Ringing the altar bells during the consecration.
6. Participating in the procession at the beginning and end of Mass.
7. Assisting with the purification of vessels after communion.
Overall, altar servers play a vital role in supporting the clergy and enhancing the worship experience for the congregation. They are expected to be reverent, attentive, and respectful during services, and to carry out their duties with dignity and poise.
